Staines opened their Surrey Border League season with a 3–2 away win at Guildford C. On his debut for Staines, Kishan Zala secured the first result of the night after just nine moves, winning with Black against Anthony Garood.

The game began as a Sicilian Four Knights. Kishan’s 6…Bb4 challenged the knight on c3. After 7.a3 Bxc3+ 8.bxc3, White had doubled c-pawns and Kishan brought his queen to a5.
The move 8…Qa5 presented White with three threats: the bishop on g5 was attacked by the queen, the c3 pawn could be captured with check, and the e4 pawn was under attack from the knight on f6. Anthony spent around 30 minutes considering the position before playing 9.Ke2, a move that addressed none of them. He resigned immediately afterward, before Kishan made another move.
Lee Neate wins with Black

Lee met 1.d4 with the Dutch Defence. Lee later noted that 5…d6 allowed 6.Qa4+, putting his bishop on b4 under threat. White played 6.Nf3 instead. The game continued into a sharp middlegame, where Lee challenged the centre with 21…e5. The decisive moment came with 26…Rxf3: a brilliant rook sacrifice on f3 that drew White’s rook forward and opened lines towards the king. After 27.Rxf3 Nxh2 28.Rc3 Nf3+ 29.Kf2 Nd4 30.Qd1 Rf8+ 31.Kg1 Bg4, Black’s attack had gathered force and White resigned. The bishop on g4 also attacked the queen on d1.
